Communication - Autism

Ministry Criteria

A severe learning disorder that is characterized by:

  • disturbances in:
    • rate of educational development;
    • ability to relate to the environment;
    • mobility;
    • perception, speech, and language;
  • lack of the representational-symbolic behaviour that precedes language.

 

Board Criteria

The student's behaviour meets the DSM-IV criteria for:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder/Pervasive Developmental Disorder
  • Asperger's Disorder
  • Autistic Disorder
  • Childhood Disintegrative Disorder
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder - not otherwise specified
  • Rett's Disorder

AND

  • Documentation that provides evidence which indicates that communication, social and/or self-regulation difficulties are having a negative impact on educational performance.

 

Requirements

  • A written report from a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons or the College of Psychologists (or an individual directly supervised by a member) which provides a diagnosis of the disorder.
  • Supportive documentation would include written reports from a Resource Teacher - Autism, a Resource Teacher - Behaviour and/or a Speech-Language Pathologist.
