Communication - Deaf & Hard of Hearing

Ministry Criteria

An impairment characterized by deficits in language and speech development because of a diminished or non-existent auditory response to sound.

 

Board Criteria

Hard of Hearing

  • slight hearing loss (16-25 dB)
  • mild hearing loss (26-40 dB)
  • moderate hearing loss (41-55 dB)
  • moderately severe hearing loss (56-70 dB)

Educationally Deaf

  • severe permanent hearing loss (71-90 dB)
  • profound permanent hearing loss (91 dB or greater).

Documentation which provides evidence that the hearing loss is negatively affecting the student=s speech and/or language development as well as her/his educational progress.

 

Requirements

A written report from an Audiologist who is a member of the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists which describes the results of a bilateral audiological assessment using the average of 500, 1000, 2000 frequencies and where normal hearing is 0 - 15 dB.

A written report from a Speech-Language Pathologist who is a member of the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists or from a Resource Teacher - Deaf and Hard of Hearing or from a Special Education Resource Teacher which describes the speech and/or language difficulties as well as the educational problems which result from the hearing loss.
