The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board stands in solidarity on February 22nd as we observe National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, condemning the exploitation of individuals, particularly the most vulnerable among us. While all individuals are susceptible to trafficking, it's crucial to recognize that women and girls constitute the majority of victims.
This day holds significant importance as it was proclaimed by the Canadian House of Commons in February 2021 to raise awareness about the pervasive issue of modern-day slavery both within Canada and abroad. Coinciding with the 2007 declaration condemning all forms of human trafficking and slavery, National Human Trafficking Awareness Day serves as a call to action against this grave violation of human rights.
Our Holy Father, Pope Francis urges us to join together in the fight against this scourge. He emphasizes, "Together we can and must fight to ensure that human rights are interpreted in a specific way, respecting diversity and recognizing the dignity of each person, with a special concern for those whose fundamental rights are violated."
Let us remain steadfast in our commitment to advocating for justice and protecting the dignity of every individual, particularly those who are most vulnerable to exploitation and trafficking. Together, let us work towards creating a world where all are free from the chains of modern-day slavery.
