Last month St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School traded in its traditional black and gold for every shade of pink.
In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, staff and students donned Barbie’s favourite colour on October 27 as part of a campaign focused on community building and support.
Led by the St. Thomas More Fighting Cancer club, highlights of the day included awards for best spirited, a breast cancer bracelet making station and free Polaroid pictures.
“Students were putting the pink Polaroid pictures in their lockers and behind their phones,” said teacher advisor Alexis Saranko.
“It's been great to see them still being displayed around the school hallways.”
“We also had a meaningful large wall mural in our front hall that read ‘At STM no one stands alone . . . together we are bigger than cancer.’”
Staff and students were invited to place pink ribbon cutouts with messages they valued on the mural.
“Cancer affects us all; therefore, we are all united by it,” said Saranko.
“It was very moving to hear stories of fighting and survival. Equally as important, the day allowed those who had experienced loss the opportunity to grieve and receive support from others in our community.”
